There is something eerie about the scene where Maverick visits Viper, and Viper"s wife immediately recognises him having never met him before and refers to him by his callsign, and every photograph in the house is of dead pilots or planes or views from planes, and Viper puts on his aviators and TOPGUN hat, and they walk outside where there"s an ocean view from the garden and a barbecue and chairs and children playing, but none of it registers as real exactly. Bearing all the indicators of a domestic space, and an idyllic one at that, Viper"s home is nevertheless ersatz, repelling any sense of an embodied life. The house, a nineteenth century cottage, white weatherboard and humble arches evoking the same picturesque as the Carpenter Gothic, is too oddly proportioned to properly do so. Harmony comes in divisions of three, but the windows of Viper"s house appear in evenly placed twos, making the house appear too tall as the eye searches for a middle balance to ground it that just isn"t there. The exterior window frames are also painted in a dark tone while the horizontal sashes are left white, reinforcing this overly rationalised and therefore botched attempt at symmetry. Neither humble nor ornate, the simple, flat walls speak to the modern utility of a campground, boarding house, barracks, or temporary dwellings purpose built for visiting officials. In short, a home to no one. The uniformly mown grass and geometric pathing adds to the sense of unease, but the way the house sits on the far edge of an overly flat, low looking section has it as a kind of uneasy parody of the private sphere; the 1950s postcard by way of the historic reserve. When Maverick leaves he apologises sorry to bother you on a Sunday, sir, but this is not Sunday, this is not a home, and this has never been anything other than an extension of military institutional imagination. The rest of the film is also set in non-spaces such as aircraft carriers, air bases, and airport bars, and even the streets of San Diego are strangely deserted. Those who are still around to inhabit it are like the last people on earth, but they are also devoid of characterisation. Their callsigns within the film"s visual context feel not dignifying but like a reduction. Just as Viper"s wife and children exist in a strange space between the military decoration on the walls and the "now" of military time (neither disappearing into the background (which is the site of ghosts) or occupying the fore (the site of drama)), the main figures automatically fall into the abstractions required of them: what they do, and their rank within that. The battle at the end, where others enter the world of the film, both secures the featurelessness of the human (enemy or otherwise) and feels oddly like a dream, less dramatic than any of the training scenes because it simply rolls itself out for Maverick to glide gently back into the world of naval aviation. What all of this means for Top Gun "s frightful exceptionalism (propaganda) is clear, but under Scott it remains peculiarly touching. The flatness of ordinary terrestrial space is offset by the skewed horizons of vertical space, and even when they land there is a discordance of time reflected in the skies. Aside from the few scenes that open in the burnt tones of sunrise, it is impossible to tell what time of day anything occurs as the skies go from morning to midday to afternoon and back again as people speak. Blue skies still somehow pull long shadows from trees and street lights, and shot reverse shots are typically staged with one figure looking to the water and one looking to land so the exchange occurs back and forth between mid morning and sundown, emergence and departure. Part of this is that sunsets cause Scott"s heart to swell, so scenes are punctuated with silhouettes against golden skies and pink waters whether it makes sense or not, but part of it taps into the way the characters seem to live in a world layered atop this one. They glide through empty streets and abstracted homes, and everyone in this limbo knows their name because there are so few people here. As they talk time crumbles, but as they fly it holds.
